December Blues

big blue catfish

December is a month filled with happy times. With Thanksgiving still fully on our minds, the Christmas planning begins. Don’t let the title fool you. This article is about big catfish and one of the best times to catch big blues is in December. Blue catfish congregate in the winter when the water gets cold. This allows you to locate big numbers of big blue cats. Blue catfish don’t slow down in the winter when it comes to feeding. Big catfish still must eat a lot to maintain their body mass. In the winter, they get nice and fat from laying around in their favorite wintering hole and eating, kind of like we do over the holidays.

There are many wintertime haunts for big blue catfish throughout the bluegrass state. Blue catfish can be found in rivers and lakes and prefer deep water in the winter. Look for the main river channel in lakes. You might find them anywhere along this channel but small creek channels that run into the main channel is often money for blue cats. This also holds true in rivers. Small tributaries that dump into the river often hold big catfish schools. The tackle and bait need not be fancy or complicated. The Mississippi and Ohio Rivers are the most popular destinations for big blue cats. Here are a couple of great blue catfish fisheries that you might want to check out.

Taylorsville Lake is in Spencer County in Taylorsville Kentucky. The lake is more than 3,000 acres and has been stocked and regulated by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources for trophy blue catfish. It’s working too, with a 97-pound blue catfish landed at Taylorsville Lake in 2020 it has the right habitat and food sources to produce big catfish.

Kentucky River The Kentucky River meanders through the mountains and Daniel Boone and finally enters the Ohio River at Carrollton Kentucky. It’s a great place to catch big blue catfish in Kentucky. Look for current breaks and deep holes usually located where the river turns to create an inside bend. These areas collect a lot of wood and offer the catfish everything it needs all year long.

A heavy rod and reel that can handle hard fight and shad or other baitfish cut into sections is all you need to go after big blues in December. When things slow down in the winter try catching a few big blue cats. There are plenty of great fisheries here in Kentucky and I encourage you to get out this winter and chase some big blue catfish. A big one isn’t always easy to find, but you will have a blast looking for one and enjoying the great outdoors.
