What Serious Spinnerbait Anglers Consider

Most anglers pick their spinnerbait skirt color and call it dialed in.

But the blade is doing just as much work, maybe more.

Here’s the concept that changes how you think about spinnerbait selection.

Match your blade size to your forage size.

In clear water, bass are hunting with their eyes. They’re tracking shad, they’re reading profiles, and they’re making decisions based on what looks right. A blade that’s oversized relative to the bait in the water sticks out as wrong. A blade that matches the size of the shad or bluegill they’re already keyed on looks like the real thing moving through the water column.

That’s the bite.

Small shad in clear water means a smaller blade. Bigger bluegill or larger forage means you can upsize accordingly. The blade becomes part of the illusion, not just an attention grabber.

As water clarity drops into stained conditions, the same logic still applies. You’re still trying to match what’s in the water. Bass can still see, they’re just working a little harder to do it. Stay connected to the forage size and let the flash and vibration do the rest.

Dirty water is where the rules change entirely.

When visibility drops to inches, forget matching anything. Bass can’t see well enough for forage imitation to matter. Now you want the biggest blade you can justify, pushing maximum water and creating the most vibration possible. You’re not fooling anyone, you’re triggering a reaction from a fish that felt your bait before it ever saw it.

The simple breakdown:

  • Clear to stained water – match blade size to the forage bass are already eating

  • Dirty water – go big, go loud, maximize vibration and water displacement
