Halibut Fishing Rig
Halibut Rig– This Halibut Rig ain’t your granny’s halibut rig. If you’re fishing for halibut and there’s any chance of catching a giant then this Halibut Rig is for you. When I was fishing for halibut in Alaska I never used Halibut Rigs made for little butts. While some people fished for chicken halibut I always targeted big halibut. If you are planning a self-guided fishing trip to Alaska this is as simple a Halibut Rigging as you will find. It will catch little halibuts but when you hook it into a barn door, very possible anywhere in Alaska, this rig can handle it with no problem. Get your true Big Halibut Rig here.
This fishing rig is perfect for the self-guided angler in Southeast Alaska. It is simple but effective. When fishing in Alaska or the West coast for halibut this simple rig is the ticket for you. Whether you are drifting or anchored, this rig is the perfect setup for you.
When I was fishing in Alaska I loved this rig. However, I finally realized that, like other fishing tactics, there are many more applications for many situations. There are times when a double J-Hook works better or a straight jig just seems to work better than the simple circle hook hoochie rig in a certain bottom structure or current situations.
When using a circle hook to rig for halibut be sure to let the fish, whether it be a halibut or any other fish set the hook on its own. Never set the hook with a circle hook. They are designed to hook the fish from the tension that is imposed on the hook naturally by the fish. I’ve seen many anglers attempt to set the hook, me included. This is due to the natural instinct to set the hook when you feel the bite. The best way to fish for halibut or any other fish with a circle hook is to let it set itself from the tension imposed on the hook from the pull of the fish.
Is the circle hook the best halibut rig?
I would say that the circle hook is probably the best all around hook for halibut rigs. If you are looking to catch halibut a few times a season and really only fish open flats anchored or maybe slow drifting then the circle hook is probably the best halibut rig hook for your fishing. If you are serious about catching halibut and jig or drift through rocky or in rough seas then maybe the J-Hook is better but for all around halibut fishing this halibut rig is the most popular.
